Aunt Toya, Long ruffled skirt
Aunt Toya or Victoria Montou embodies the resistance of women during the revolutionary era of Haiti and the one who was responsible for the education of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, her nephew. She hails from the Kingdom of Dahomey (current Benin) as an elite fighter of the king under the name of Adbaraya Toya. She will teach her nephew African history and culture, combat techniques, the use of weapons, freedom and revolutionary ideas. She contributed enormously to the construction of the personality of her nephew and took part in many military activities. Endowed with a strong personality, she finds herself in command of fifty slaves and participates in the general unrest among the slaves of the island of Santo Domingo where she will be captured.
